How is Bottled Water Classified?
Bottled water refers to water that is sold as a foodstuff in sealed containers. It can come in different volumes and contains no added flavours and sweeteners. This water has different classifications according to the treatments it received.
Prepared Water
Rainwater is caught up in dams and it also falls on the ground and precipitates through to become groundwater in springs and boreholes. Rain, Spring- and Borehole water is treated by the municipality with chemicals and antimicrobial processes to make it safe for human consumption and is supplied to the public as tap water. Tap water that is purified and bottled is known as Prepared water. Minerals like Calcium and Magnesium can be added to Prepared Water. And it may also be carbonised to make Sparkling water. It can also come from Natural Sources, as long as the treatments received are acceptable for bottled water.
Natural Waters
Natural Spring Water is groundwater that naturally flows to the earth’s surface; and minimal treatment is allowed. The trace mineral composition of Natural Mineral water is obtained from the source it came from and will be proportionately the same as the rocks strata it flowed though. Minimal treatment is allowed and no minerals can be added.
Spring and Mineral water
Is water that defined by its origin, either from a spring or the groundwater aquifer, no chemicals or minerals can be added but it is allowed to be carbonised, filtered and treated to remove bacteria.
